YellowFever
Austin, TX band Yellow Fever play minimal art pop a la Young Marble Giants, Stereolab, and 80s Rough Trade. Formed in the summer of 2006, they have released three EPs as well as a 7 inch on Hugpatch records, as well as a singles collection via the Vivian Girls' Wild World label imprint. Band members Jennifer Moore and Adam Jones coordinate as an engaged bass/vocal/drum/keyboard duo by default, though they have been periodically accompanied by additional musicians. Their most recent release is the self-released Bermuda Triangle CD EP.
"We're delighted to be the only store offering the brand new self-released CD-R EP by Austin's YellowFever! Bermuda Triangle reflects how the band, now a duo, have refined their offbeat pop sound in the year or so since releasing the material that was featured on the self-titled compilation reissued by the Vivian Girls' Wild World label in December. The four original songs here are even more hooky and expertly written than before, with a newfound maturity that only enables their addictively quirky sensibility. There's even an Americana-tinged instrumental featuring alluring violin on here, plus two covers, one by Austin band Horse and Donkey, the other a smooth, minimal cover of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me." Far and away the strongest output by these phenomenal underground pop geniuses thus far!" -Karen Soskin / Other Music

Kathryn Calder photographed by Caleb Beyers
Some things are worth waiting for, and this couldn't be more true of Kathryn Calder's debut solo album Are You My Mother? - a recording jam-packed with contributions from her amazing friends Neko Case, Kurt Dahle and Todd Fancey of The New Pornographers and members of Ladyhawk and Frog Eyes.
After playing keyboards and singing for Immaculate Machine and The New Pornographers for the past several years, a little voice in Kathryn Calder's head started to ask her, 'What would it be like to put out your own record?' When she couldn't wait any longer to find out, she and her producer, Colin Stewart, took over her childhood home in Victoria, BC and set up an impromptu recording studio. With little in the way of props or technology, the pair started to cobble together the songs that would become Are you my Mother?.
Kathryn is the first to admit that she had no idea of what she wanted out of the experience before beginning to work on this CD. She'd made lots of records before, but she'd always been one of many collaborators working together on a project. She was used to half writing songs and then taking them to band members who would each have their input to help transform them. This time, she didn't have that option and was forced to focus, work through her blocks, and go on a voyage of discovery that allowed her to finish the songs by herself.
Sprightly, innovative, and optimistic, the ten original songs that came out of Calder and Stewart's hard work will surely make Are you my Mother? one of 2010's most enduring releases.
Are you my Mother? is a transitional record from an already accomplished artist firmly hitting her stride as a solo performer. With this record, Kathryn Calder proves herself as a musician to watch, and as someone who makes music that's built to last. Are you my Mother? offers a timeless collection of songs, and years from now you'll be able to say that you were there.

Athens, Georgia-based quintet Dead Confederate is excited to announce the release of their sophomore record Sugar, due on August 24th on TAO Recordings/Old Flame. The anticipated follow up to their debut Wrecking Ball, this album explores new styles beyond the aching, bleak psychedelia with which the band originally made their mark.
Recorded by John Agnello (Hold Steady, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) during a record-setting blizzard in New Jersey, the sessions focused on the malleability of the freshly written songs. The start to this progression was shaped by tours with legends Dinosaur Jr. and Meat Puppets, and gave Dead Confederate an increased appreciation for the early underground bands of the 80s and 90s that laid the foundation on which their sound is built. The album also features a special guest appearance by J. Mascis on the single "Giving It All Away."
Splitting songwriting duties between bassist Brantly Senn and singer/guitarist Hardy Morris, each songwriter picked their favorite of the other's contributions, creating a complimentary collection of songs. Instead of touring the newly penned tracks, the band (Jason Scarboro, Walker Howle, John Watkins) spent two days learning 20 songs and a week reworking them, then laid half of them down.
Dead Confederate is currently touring Europe, with a return to the US in June for Kentucky's Forecastle Festival. Be on the lookout for more tour dates as the release of Sugar nears.

Sister Hazel, the five-piece southern rock band from Gainesville, Florida, plans to release a digital EP, entitled “Threeve,” on June 1, 2010. It will be available via all music download portals. The EP features three brand-new songs (thus its name): “All The Love,” “My Heart,” and “Can’t Fight It.” Sister Hazel also plans to release a new studio full-length in October.
The band is also looking forward to its fifth annual fan weekend, the Hazelnut Hang at the Windjammer in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, which is being held June 4 – June 6, 2010. The Hang, which the band created as a way to interact more closely with their fans, is a weekend gathering of fans, friends, and the band members to share music, food, and fun. There will be two ticket packages available to Hang attendees, each offering fans different goodies. Tickets are on sale now. All details are available at www.rockridgemusic.com/hazelnuthang, as are lists from the band about why they love hosting the Hang and photos of past gatherings.
“Threeve” follows on the heels of the band’s most-recent album, “Release,” which debuted at #37 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in August 2009. In support of “Release” and the forthcoming “Threeve,” the band continues on the road (see full tour schedule below). Sister Hazel is also set to host the Rock Boat XI, the world's largest floating music festival, from January 6 to 10, 2011, on the Carnival Inspiration. The band co-founded the Rock Boat cruise with Sixthman in 2001. And recently on tour, while in Washington, DC, for a show at the 9:30 Club on May 15th, the band went to visit wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. With guitars in hand, they went room-to-room, performing, signing autographs, and taking pictures with recuperating soldiers.
Music fans who aren’t already following Sister Hazel on Twitter should do so: they have over 776,000 followers (@sisterhazelband), and all five band members actively update the feed daily with information about upcoming shows and appearances, musings about life on the road, details about their personal lives and families, and the things they like to do when they aren’t on stage.
Also coming in June, band fans are encouraged to check out the store section on the band’s website: new merchandise, including sheet music, will be available.

Seattle-based quintet Minus the Bear is proud to announce the addition of four weeks worth of tour dates on their already successful North American headlining tour. Currently on the west coast with upcoming shows at The Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles and a performance at this year's Sasquatch! Music Festival, the band is on the road in support of their new album OMNI, which debuted in the Top 50 of the Billboard Top 200. The new set of dates begin June 25th in Victoria, BC and include a performance at this year's Lollapalooza. Released May 4th on Dangerbird Records, Alternative Press calls OMNI "An immaculate vacuum of dark-yet-catchy '80s prog and new wave" and "the perfect album to launch [MTB] into another dimension entirely."
Fans can check out the entertaining video for the band's first single, MY TIME, here: http://www.dangerbirdrecords.com/public/video/MTB/MTB_MyTime_Short.mov With deep bass lines, provocative lyrics and use of the Japanese Omnichord synthesizer, MY TIME, is a rush of pure electro-pop lust, revealing new layers in the band's songwriting and inimitable musical style. Boldly experimental yet instantly accessible, OMNI is Minus the Bear's most provocative and potent work to date. Paste Magazine raves, "OMNI is a record to rupture speakers. Dave Knudson's noodling has evolved into heavier, tighter riffing, allowing his Bear bandmates to flex; the result is the group's most explosive record." AOL Spinner goes on to say "each tune on OMNI, though tighter and more focused, will spin heads and warp minds" while The Austin American Statesman raves "OMNI showcases a band expanding its musical palette ... stepping far beyond genre constrictions." www.myspace.com/minusthebearwww.minusthebear.comTOUR DATES:June 25 Sugar Nightclub Victoria, BC June 26 Venue Vancouver, BC June 27 Republik Nightclub Calgary, AB June 28 Starlite Room Edmonton, AB June 29 The Distrikt Regina, SK June 30 The Royal Albert Winnipeg, MB July 2 Taste of Minnesota St. Paul, MN July 3 The Intersection Grand Rapids, MN July 4 Mod Club Toronto, ON July 5 Water Street Music Hall Rochester, NY July 7 Starland Ballroom Sayreville, NJ July 8 Webster Hall New York, NY July 9 Northern Lights Clifton Park, NYJuly 10 Mr. Smalls Theatre Pittsburgh, PA July 11 Forecastle Festival Louisville, KY July 12 Firebird St. Louis, MO July 13 The Granada Lawrence, KS July 14 Ogden Theatre Denver, CO July 15 In The Venue Salt Lake City, UTJuly 16 Knitting Factory Boise, ID July 17 Showbox at the Market Seattle, WA August 6-8 Lollapalooza Chicago, IL

8000 bam bam (Samuel Cooper) & Baby Seal (Brady Keehn), the two members of Sunglasses met at Savannah College of Art and Design. Samuel majoring in Film and Television, Brady majoring in Sound Design. Samuel Cooper originally growing up in North Georgia, and Brady Keehn from Washington D.C, the two came to Savannah in search of finding creative friends who shared the same interest and goals. They first started working together on Samuel's Senior thesis film, MILES. The film, written and directed Cooper, was an 8 1/2 inspired black and white musical short film in which Keehn supervised the sound design. After the project was completed they were surprised that the work flow was so consistent and enjoyable that the two immediately began the next project, Sunglasses. With this band, the two wanted to combine Samuel's love for pop songs with Brady's obsession with bass and multi-layered beats. Recently completing their debut EP, Sunglasses plans on touring the East Coast slowly making their way to New York City, eventually moving to Maryland to record their debut full length at Brady's Lake House.
Some of Sunglasses heroes include: Harry Nilsson, Outkast, Luis Bunuel, Big Star, Walter Murch, Chaka Khan, Phil Spector, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, Dr. Dre, Talking Heads, Les Baxter, Brian Wilson, World Famous Supreme Team, XTC, A Tribe Called Quest, Sir George Martin, Woody Allen, Quincy Jones and Fish Humans in the Pool.

Melbourne-via-Capetown trio Clubfeet are excited to announce the release of their debut album Gold on Gold with NY dance label Plant Music, set for release on July 27th. Check out their first single, "Teenage Suicide," off Gold on Gold, and heed their uplifting advice.
Gold on Gold comes just in time for summer: their songs double as beach party anthems and four-on-the-floor club bangers and may have you believe they were recorded on warm nights on the Cote d'Azur, and then mixed on the last Concorde over the Atlantic. Having drawn comparisons by critics to Hot Chip, Teenagers, and Junior Boys, their whimsical lyrics and tear-jerking melodies offer a different take on the usual tales of lost love, late night parties, and infidelities.
Clubfeet tours as a three-piece live act, having played at V Fest and Summerdayz, supported sold out shows with Art vs. Science and Grafton Primary, and DJ'ed everywhere from yacht parties in Cape Town, MTV parties in the U.K., to warehouse parties in Melbourne. Next stop: the USA.

Thieves Like Us
Thieves Like Us continue their style of sentimental electronic music with their second long player, Again and Again. Recorded in early 2009 in a basement in Paris, the songs here reflect the mood of the band, and focus particularly on failed relationships, alcoholism, and the yearning for that perfect imaginary soul mate.
While the faster songs like "Shyness," "One Night With You" and "The Walk" are clearly aimed at the French dance floors, there are plenty of downtempo songs here too. "Never Known Love" and "So Clear" fit somewhere in the spectrum of Slowdive or The Cocteau Twins. After following the band through the highs of their nighttime adventures, the album closes with the very intimate ballad "Forget Me Not" and we are left realizing what goes up, must come down.
Bio: Thieves Like Us are two Swedes and one American living in Berlin, Paris, and Milan. They are one of the only multi-nationals that won't exploit you. Mexicans love them. The French love them. Americans love them. The Japanese love them. Neither Andy Grier (vocals, guitar), Björn Berglund (synth), nor Pontus Berghe (percussion) live in their home countries, and none of them probably ever will again.
They first met at a picnic in East Berlin in 2002. Since then, they have also lived together in London, Paris, and New York City. The trio can often been seen in and around night clubs, but they fit awkwardly there. Thieves Like Us were first discovered by the French imprint Kitsuné who released their single, "Drugs In My Body" in 2007. They make pop music with a vintage electronic feel. Many times it makes you dance. Other times it makes you feel strange and wonderful. Back in the day they probably would have signed a contract in blood with Factory Records. 2008's Play Music, their first album, would definitely have fit the bill. BBC Music called it "consistently exciting ... a contender for electronic album of the year." A writer for the legendary entity Amoeba Music exclaimed: "I have managed to fall deeply in love with this band in a matter of weeks. It is getting to the point where I don't want to listen to anything else." They are just about to release their second album, Again and Again, and continue their non-stop world tour..

Celebrated UK trio KEANE will embark on a headlining US tour this summer in support of their new album Night Train, out tomorrow on Cherrytree/Interscope Records. The tour kicks off July 20th in Oakland, CA and sees the band traveling across the country, wrapping up August 11th in Minneapolis. Tickets go on sale May 14th. Tour dates below. Supporting the tour will be Travis frontman Fran Healy and Ingrid Michaelson.
KEANE's most recent releaase features eight refreshingly innovative tracks written and recorded while the band was on a 28-country arena tour in support of their album Perfect Symmetry. Night Train includes several songs that challenge the boundaries of genre via unique collaborations with Somali/Canadian rapper K'NAAN and Japanese funk singer Tigarah. The album has already been lauded for its signature brooding rock combined with synth-pop flourishes, leading Rolling Stone to say that with its "brass-bolstered soul" and "electro-flavored dance pop...Keane have proved themselves masters of...pop perkiness." Alternative Press drew comparisons to David Bowie and Radiohead and People gave it three out of four stars.
Since their inception in 2003, KEANE has sold 10 million copies of their three award-winning albums and seen remarkable success with their singles "Somewhere Only We Know," "Everybody's Changing" and "Bedshaped," among many others. The band's particular brand of evocative piano rock propelled by literate, heartfelt songcraft has propelled them to worldwide adoration and success.

The Cat Empire do what they do best on new release Cinema, blurring the lines between ska, jazz, funk, and rock, and colouring the festivities with a Latin flair that defies their Down Under roots. The band's fifth studio release - their first since the acclaimed So Many Nights in 2007 - will be issued July 6 in the United States, two weeks after it is unveiled in The Cat Empire's Australian homeland, where they have attained multi-platinum success many times over en-route to becoming one of the country's hottest musical exports. The Cat Empire will celebrate the release of Cinema with a string of US performances, including headlining dates at The Fonda in Los Angeles (July 3), Ravinia in Chicago (July 6) and Webster Hall in New York (July 30). The band will return to America for a full-length tour later this year. Hailed for their smoldering live show, The Cat Empire looked to the stage for their inspiration on Cinema, and the results are their most dynamic and streamlined album to date. "This album has emerged out of a sound we have developed on stage over years of playing together," says singer and percussionist Felix Riebl. "In the past, we often pieced songs together in an eclectic cultural mix, but with this there is a much more integrated and unique Cat Empire sound that runs consistently through - the lyrics are perhaps darker, but they are accompanied by music that is often uplifting, so there's a strange, but powerful feeling to it." That power is fundamental to the band's live performances, which have included headlining sets atop international festivals including Bonnaroo (U.S.), Summersonic (Japan), Rock am Ring (Germany) and V Fest (U.K.), marquee billing on the Montreal Jazz Festival, where they performed before an audience of 300,000, and appearances on television shows including network heavyweights Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. "The new album was made of songs that were designed to be performed live," says McGill. "We took the best parts of our live show and used them to inspire each of these songs, and the plan is to deliver the best live show that we can. I think the audience can expect to be blown away." "At times the album is thoughtful, at times it makes you just forget and dance," adds Riebl. It is an album that has more sonic depth than we've ever had before, experimental in parts but with really direct choruses - it's going to be a great album to play live, especially on big stages and at festivals.'" The Cat Empire is Felix Riebl (vocals, percussion), Harry Angus (vocals, trumpet), Ollie McGill (keyboards), Ryan Monro (bass), Will Hull-Brown (drums) and Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwala (decks, percussion). Neverever
Jihae and Wallace Meek are a couple with a keen ear for POP who've travelled the world together in search of the perfect tune. Having met in Glasgow while Ms. Meek was the singer for pop phenoms The Royal We and Mr. Meek helmed the excellent Bricolage, they eventually relocated to LA to soak in the sunny vibes and pop history. Surrounded by stacks of dusty 45s, crack musicians and dinette counters lined with hopefuls and has-beens, they set about on the next stage in their musical journey. Neverever is their new band, a tough group with a flair for echoey three minute symphonies, marrying classic pop melodies with punk-informed crunch and glam-infused 70s stomp.
Angelic Swells is the their debut album, and it's a remarkable effort that takes in 50s rock 'n roll, 60s girl-group sounds, the 70s glam heyday of Slade and Suzi Quatro and 80s power-pop on its way to creating a bang-up-to-date idea of what pop should sound like in 2010. It's a timeless sound: fuzzy riffs, pounding rhythms and tales of teenage love and lust. In other words - classic POP. From the epic, widescreen opener of "Here Is Always Somewhere Else" to the breathless tale of adolescent sexual awkwardness that is "Coconut Shampoo" to the slow-dance swoon of "16th Wonder," every tune could be a lost hit echoing from a crackly AM radio. Not that there's anything lo-fi happening here; the band worked hard with Jeff Ehrenberg at famed LA studio Infrasonic (No Age, Beck, Peter Case) to give Angelic Swells that warm, technicolor sound that marks so many great records.
First single (under the name The Champagne Socialists) "Blue Genes" is here in freshly recorded form, its catchy guitar riff and rama-lama drums literally jump from the speakers and head straight for your feet, sure to pack the dancefloor and get you hand-clapping along with the chorus. "Young Runways" and "Teardrop Tattoo" go for a Shadow Morton vibe, updated slices of girl-group goodness that re-imagine the Shangri Las as they might have sounded playing at CBGBs in 1976: brilliant power-pop for the '00s with nods to Blondie and Shop Assistants along the way. The power-pop connection is made explicit by Neverever's cover of The Plimsoul's "Now," which fits in so well with the rest of the songs that you'd think it was an original. The albums end with a bang with "Underwater Ballet," two and a half minutes of glorious pop stomp that accelerates to a cacophonous finale.
Neverever know their pop history, but they also know how to write great songs and Angelic Swells provides ample evidence of that. It is a an ambitious, iconoclastic record packed with rambunctious riffs, rumbling drums, ear-nagging melodies and, most of all, timeless tunes.

Brooklyn-based quintet Extra Life recently debuted a brand new Tyondai Braxton (Battles) remix of their single "Head Shrinker," with Stereogum, available for mp3 download here via LOAF. Stereogum premiered the band's memorable "Head Shrinker" video a few months back, and calls the Braxton remix an "insectoid scratch-implosion, giving [Extra Life] their first pair of slippery dancing shoes." Taken from Extra Life's lauded sophomore album Made Flesh, out now on LOAF, "Head Shrinker" gets a unique re-invention by Braxton as a futuristic robo disco group that creates an intricate web of electronic sound. The remix is off of the band's forthcoming remix EP, Splayed Flesh, coming out June 22nd on Planaria/ Sockets. Lower Dens
Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, Jana Hunter's voice, and insistent drum throbs are the core components of Baltimore's Lower Dens. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost-heavy weird-fi, is now writing and playing with a group that might get filed as new wave, or drone pop, or post-punk. With due deference to her solo work, we're very glad.
The swarming wave-throb, coupled with Hunter's lyrics and redolent, charred voice, wrecks. The band's upcoming record, Twin-Hand Movement, is eleven perfect songs long. From opener "Blue & Silver" (anxiety mounts at a quick clip until the final climactic release) to "Plastic & Powder" (a churning, narcotic slow-burner) to "Hospice Gates" (penultimate album cut, proud weirdo anthem, possible creative zenith), not one is a space-taker. They're rife with the survivalist paranoia you'd expect from residents of a post-urban port hole (and this particular songwriter), crafted methodically and beautifully, and carry you enthusiastically out into the rolling breaks of industrial filth-water.
Lower Dens formed in 2009, when Hunter set about finding a full-time band. They spent the rest of the year sweating in attics and basements, and only stepped out of the shadows to do a quick tour and record. Twin-Hand Movement was recorded by Chris Freeland (ex-Oxes drummer; proprietor of Beat Babies, Baltimore), mixed by Chris Coady (at his DNA, NYC), and mastered by Sarah Register (of the Lodge, NYC and the band Talk Normal.)
They'll tour this summer, first through the US with hometown friends Future Islands and then again and again, and everywhere.

As New York duo The Golden Filter prepares for the US release of their debut album, Voluspa, on June 15, the group has come up with a "stellar" way to give back to their fans...
The Golden Filter are giving away stars--yep, gaseous, fiery, faraway stars--with randomly selected copies of their CDs. When you pre-order a physical CD or Vinyl through the bands website, you get an instant download of the digital version, including two bonus tracks and two exclusive video's. Plus, a lucky twenty fans will get a celestial being in addition to the album -- one purchased and renamed star, to be specific, along with a one-of-a-kind Polaroid taken by the duo (shown above). You can listen to the band's debut in full over at their website.
The Golden Filter will be performing a one-off show at the Mercury Lounge in New York City on Friday, May 14 with support from The Hundred In The Hands (tickets available here), before preparing for a national tour in June in support of Voluspa. The band's latest single "Hide Me" is out this week. The single comes with a Peter Bjorn & John's Hortlax Cobra Remix (returning the favor for TGF's remix of "Lay It Down,") a Clock Opera Remix and the band's own "Nine Worlds" remix, all available over at iTunes.

The Blow
After a year's hiatus from performing, The Blow's Khaela Maricich is stepping back onto the stage with a new body of material. She is presenting a new set of songs, along with a narrative stage performance to accompany the music. The Blow recently opened a string of concerts for Vampire Weekend, and there had the opportunity to try out the fresh material in a large venue format. The upcoming tour of the Northeast is planned as a workshop, where Maricich can test out and develop performance elements in intimate settings. For the upcoming album and performance cycle, Maricich is working in collaboration with installation and sound artist Melissa Dyne. Dyne will augment the live Blow performances and recordings with her expertise in accoustics, light, and spatial phenomena. The Blow is currently at work on a full length album, and plans to release an EP of new material later in 2010. The Blow has recently performed segments of the new work at The Baltimore Museum of Art, Harvard University, and Pulse Art Fair in Miami.

Camera Can’t Lie will be embarking on a tour with labelmate Jason Castro to promote their five track EP entitled Days & Days. Camera Can't Lie is comprised of high school friends Eric Arjes (Vocals/Guitar), Kyle Lindsay (Bass), and hard-hitting drummer Josh Bendell. “These songs are an accumulation of the last five years of our lives. I think that’s why we are so attached to what we’ve created and why it’s impossible to peg this album with just one theme. This album is, in so many words, about finding hope in chaos, focusing on the present, speaking with actions instead of words, putting your heart on the line, dealing with internal struggle, and risking the safe and the comfortable for a chance at greatness. It is a play-by-play of our journey as a band, and I couldn’t be more proud,” says Arjes. They are a band built by the road for the road. They came from the Midwest but their home is the stage. Heartfelt and unabashed music lovers, they go by the motto: “We are strugglers, sinners, gentlemen, and fighters.” Philanthropic through and through, they have donated an acoustic version of Radiohead’s “High & Dry” for the Biggest Label Ever that creates awareness for the Invisible Children program. There will much more to come from Camera Can’t Lie as they are finishing up their debut record, produced by Ron Aniello (Lifehouse, Guster).

Philadelphia indie rock trio GOOD OLD WAR announces new US tour dates, beginning May 1st at SUNY Oneonta in New York where they will support fun. with Person L opening shows. The band will appear at the Bamboozle festival in East Rutherford, NJ on May 2nd, before kicking off a several-week tour on May 20th in Philadelphia, PA with Yukon Blonde and Audra Mae. GOOD OLD WAR is gearing up for the release of their self-titled album, which arrives June 1st on Sargent House. They recently played several shows at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX and completed a short run of dates with Circa Survive.
GOOD OLD WAR's sophomore release is the result of several winter months spent holed up in a remote house in the Pocono Mountains, where band mates Keith Goodwin, Dan Schwartz and Tim Arnold crafted this earnest, original collection of songs in near-isolation. The album explores weightier topics such as love, loss and addiction, and the band experimented with new instruments, techniques and conventions to push the boundaries of their familiar indie rock/folk territory.
Since their conception two years ago, GOOD OLD WAR has shared the stage with The Gaslight Anthem, Heartless Bastards, Anthony Green, RX Bandits and The Honorary Title. Their single "Coney Island" enjoyed Triple-A airplay and the video was in heavy rotation on MTVu.

HANSON is excited to announce the release of their new record, Shout It Out, on their own 3CG Records on June 8, 2010. Shout It Out is the three -time Grammy-nominated independent band of brothers' fifth studio record. It's a fantastically infectious collection of finely crafted, R&B-flavored pop-rock -- an homage to the music that inspired the band when they started out. The album was recorded in a studio on a 2,000-acre pecan farm in El Paso, Texas, and was produced and written exclusively by HANSON, augmented with special guests: Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt, who played on some of Motown's greatest hits, as well as horn arranger Jerry Hey, who worked with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind and Fire and many more.
"The anatomy of our band is similar to a '70s rock band - three guys from the Midwest who grew up listening to '50s and '60s soul, who are mixing guitars, with vintage keys and melodic songs," Taylor Hanson says. Adds Isaac, "We've never stopped aspiring to the great songwriters and performers who struck a chord with us first, that early rock 'n' rock roll and soul music from Chuck Berry to Otis Redding. We've rediscovered that aspiration on this record. There's a little more swing and a little more air."
The insanely catchy first single from Shout It Out, "Thinking 'Bout Somethin'," will be released exclusively via Itunes on April 27th. For the video, directed by Todd Edwards (Hoodwinked), the band re-created a much-loved scene from the cult classic The Blues Brothers, where soul music incited a huge impromptu crowd to dance in the streets. In their re-creation, HANSON took to the streets of their hometown of Tulsa with more than 300 extras, including two of Taylor's children, 60 local dancers and hundreds of loyal fans who traveled from far and wide to participate. To top it off, 'Weird Al' Yankovic made an unforgettable guest appearance.
To hear the "Thinking 'Bout Somethin'," click here.
Besides performing at The Bamboozle festival on Saturday May 1st, HANSON will be hosting a sold-out five-night engagement at New York City's Blender Theater at the Gramercy, during which the band will be performing, in their entirety, each of their four previous albums, leading up to a worldwide premier of Shout It Out. Their tour of the states in support of the new record begins July 21st. The dates for the tour will be announced soon.
HANSON emotes such fresh energy on Shout It Out that it's easy to forget that this band has been around the block a few times -- multiple Grammy nominations (drummer Zac is the youngest nominated songwriter in history), years of headline shows everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl and world-records for the loudest concert audience in history. They've sold millions of records and reached a level of adoration that few bands experience, and have also faced career obstacles that would have broken many artist's resolve. They waded through four years of struggle with a new corporate label made up of inherited executives in discord with the band, which eventually lead the band to leave the label (chronicled in the documentary film Strong Enough To Break) and launch their own independent record company, 3CG Records, in 2003. Amidst a crumbling industry, they built their own infrastructure around a DIY attitude and their commitment to their music and their fans. Their independent moves paid off, building a brand that has grown with successful independent albums, singles and tours, during a decade when music sales plummeted. In addition, launching alongside their 2007 album The Walk, they championed calls for action on humanitarian efforts, galvanizing tens of thousands of people around the world to participate in barefoot one-mile walks to fight HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa (TakeTheWalk.net).
With Shout It Out, HANSON deliver a powerful group of soulful, melodic tunes that will leave you with a contagious sense of optimism for the future and welcomed reminiscence for American rock 'n' roll.

Thee Oh Sees
The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees are back with another full-length long-player. Warm Slime is guaranteed to please fans of their whacked-out garage / psych / punk jams. Recorded by Sacramento sultan of sound Chris Woodhouse, Warm Slime carries on in the same tradition as the group's previous In The Red release, Help, showcasing their more electrified and rocking side, in comparison to other recent home-recorded releases. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the mind-bending title track, which clocks in at nearly 14 minutes and takes up the entirety of the album's first side. It's a psychedelic epic of "Inna Gadda Da Vida" proportions! John Dwyer's guitar playing is at its quadra-spazzed best here, and the vocal interplay with Brigid Dawson gives it a B-52s-at-their-least-cheesy-crossed-with-the-Troggs vibe. The results are stunning.
