Asylum Street Spankers-God's Favorite Band

Posted by Joseph Bridges on Thursday, November 26, 2009, In : Reviews

Artist: Asylum Street Spankers

Title: God’s Favorite Band

Label: Yellow Dog Records

Genre: Folk/Gospel

When a band calls itself a postmodern gospel band, there are things that come to mind that are not exactly endearing. Jug band usually indicates a kind of folksy twang that is reminiscent of Deliverance and gospel usually excludes most listeners to music in general as somewhat sentimental and hokey, but upon just one listen to God’s Favorite Band breaks all preconceived ideas.

Josh Mease Free Download

Posted by P Shather on Friday, November 13, 2009, In : Free Downloads
Josh Mease, originally from Houston, Texas, lives in Brooklyn, where he can often be found exploring the abandoned corners of the city, finding peaceful solace in cemeteries, empty swimming pools, and abandoned waterfronts. His debut LP, Wilderness, is the result of these wanderings. It was patched together from various recording sessions in Texas, Connecticut and most notably the closet of his Brooklyn apartment, where neighbors’ loud parties, clanking pipes, and the sound of traffic on th...

A Sunny Day in Glasgow

Bio:

Opening with a ten second homage to Estonian composer Arvo Part, it's immediately apparent that A Sunny Day in Glasgow's new album, Ashes Grammar, is going to be a much more visceral outing than their 2007 album debut, Scribble Mural Comic Journal. It takes a few minutes for the record to even begin to reveal itself, as a swarm of 1950s acapella ("Secrets at the prom") gives way to resonant drones, room noise, and sub bass ("Slaughter killing carnag...

Carl Sagan Releases Single on Third Man Records

Posted by Joseph Bridges on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, In : Free Downloads
“A Glorious Dawn” is a moving arrangement of Carl Sagan’s sagacious words culled from his magnificent “Cosmos” series. The piece initially gained recognition when composer John Boswell uploaded to YouTube his remixed Sagan dialogue edited, Auto-Tuned and put to a beat and coupled with a guest appearance by Stephen Hawking. At well over one million views, this is a project that goes far-beyond the buzz of “Internet phenomenon.”

For Against-Never Been

Posted by Joseph Bridges on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, In : Reviews

Artist: For Against

Title: Never Been

Label: Words On Music

Genre: Rock

When trying to think of bands from Nebraska, very few come to mind. A quick Google search turned up a few notable bands such as Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint, and For Against. For Against started as all bands do with several name changes such as Glue which didn’t stick (yes, I know, a bad pun) and Four Against One that was shortened to its current incarnation. After the release of their criti...

Stace England and the Salt Kings-The Amazing Oscar Micheaux

Posted by Joseph Bridges on Saturday, November 7, 2009, In : Reviews

Reading the liner notes to an album is an important part of listening to any album (Note: For those of you out there who think an MP3 is actually music, go buy a physical cd. It costs about the same and includes notations and pictures that add to the effect and tone of the music. i.e The Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band). Some notes are sparse as the musicians would like you to dream some of the meanings to the songs. Some notes are copious. Those are the ones I like and on The ...

Brilliant Colors-Introducing...

Artist: Brilliant Colors

Title: Introducing…

Label: Slumberland Records

Genre: Rock

Introducing Brilliant Colors is an introduction to guitarist Jess Scott’s band with only twenty-two and a half minutes of fuzzy ripped music that may be a prologue to a great career. With so little time and so much to explore, Brilliant Colors delivers a pitch on each song that is defining to a degree and at the same time defines nothing. There are tinges from the pre-punk era where bands reverbed...

Gabriel Sullivan-By the Dirt

Artist: Gabriel Sullivan

Title: By the Dirt

Label: Fell City Records

Genre: Rock/Pop

The subtleties of Arizona are an inspiration for Gabriel Sullivan’s debut album on By the Dirt. To pigeon-hole Sullivan though as a singer of the southwest would be a disservice to a nuanced writer and artist who knows how to mix well a blend of blues country with the spice of seventies punk.

Owing a voice to the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, Sullivan gravelly gravitates throughout his debut l...

Timber Timbre-Timber Timbre

Artist: Timber Timbre

Title: Timber Timbre

Label: Arts and Crafts

Genre: Folk

Taylor Kirk brings us yet another folk reminder of our pop blues from the past with his band Timber Timbre. A big difference here between Timber and everything else coming out in this new genre bending line is that Kirk and his band mates come from Canada and not the down home country delta. Being Canadian has no bearing on how good the music is though. Our neighbors to the north still feel the soul, still ...

The Books
The Books

With a cut-and-paste musical aesthetic, The Books, a.k.a. Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, didnʼt invent the audio collage, but they have perfected the idea of incorporating found sound into their music. Not interested in repeating snippets of sound or vocals as in hip hop, The Books use whole sections of speech, where natural pauses and repetitions create an atmosphere all their own. As Zammuto explains, The Books record "little pieces and use the computer to organize...
